Etienne Stott MBE

Olympic Champion & Environmental Campaigner

Etienne Stott won the Gold Medal at the London 2012 Olympics in the sport of canoe slalom, with his crew-mate Tim Baillie. Their historic victory at a home Olympics helped Team GB to an unprecedented 3rd in the medal table and ignited the British public’s enthusiasm.

Etienne first tried canoeing aged ten with his local Scout group. It has been a passion ever since, driving a career spanning 20 years, encompassing the challenges of serious injury, intense rivalry and grave disappointment. Across this time he gained deep insight into high performance and the process of excellence. After Tim’s retirement in 2013, Etienne undertook an intense push for Rio 2016 with a new crew-mate, Mark Proctor. Sadly their campaign ended unsuccessfully and Etienne made the decision to retire, although he remains an active paddler.

In 2019, Etienne finished an Open University degree in psychology to add to the practical knowledge gained through his athletic career. He believes in the potential of all human beings and is keen to contribute his knowledge for the good of society. Etienne is a passionate, warm and authentic communicator, presenter, workshop facilitator and coach. He is now an outspoken campaigner for immediate action to tackle the climate and ecological emergency. Etienne is a proud and visible member of Extinction Rebellion. He has been arrested 10 times as part of the group’s peaceful civil disobedience actions which have had a signifcant, but sometimes controversial, impact on public discourse around the environmental crisis. Etienne is also involved with ‘Champions for Earth’, a campaign group which aims to harness the power of sport and sporting values in the struggle to address the planetary emergency.
