This year’s VegfestUK London will feature a brand-new Art of Compassion Exhibition featuring art work from a number of vegan artists from worldwide, with proceeds from the sale of the 50 art posters on display to be donated to one of the UK’s biggest vegan outreach charities Animal Aid.
THE ART OF COMPASSION PROJECT
The Art of Compassion Project is an international art collective involving vegan artists from all around the world. They aim to raise funds through various art projects and donate 100% of the profits to (small and large) vegan non-profit organizations. So far they have raised money for Veganuary (UK), Hillside Animal Sanctuary (UK), Barefoot Vegan Farm & Animal Sanctuary (France), Viva! (UK) and River’s Wish Animal Sanctuary (UK).
WHERE THE IDEA CAME FROM
The project started off in early 2015 as an idea Leigh Sanders (Spain) had for a vegan art book to raise funds for Veganuary after they were integral in her transition to veganism the year before. Once Leigh had done some research and tracked down as many vegan artists as she could find, there was such an incredibly overwhelming response from the artists wanting to get involved in fundraising that the initial idea for a book evolved into what is now The Art of Compassion Project. Ironically, work on the book was postponed, but it is definitely still in the works.
All the artists are vegan, which Leigh believes adds a certain depth and honesty to their work that one would not find otherwise. There is a sense of community among the 80 vegan artists, who use their work as a form of activism and self-expression.
Past projects have included calendars, dining-out cards, a crowdfunding campaign, online art auction, downloadable colouring-in book as well as art exhibitions at VeggieWorld expos in London, Paris, Barcelona and Munich.
There are some exciting projects in the pipeline, including art exhibitions in China next month. Artists are currently working on 2 projects in aid of A Well Fed World (USA), one being a 2018 Vegan Art calendar which will be on sale from the 1st November and available for purchase online at www.artofcompassionproject.com
